We’ve all been there: we’re in a movie theater and someone in front of us stretches and we are blinded by their Apple Watch. The good news is that there is a way to stop this from happening so that you are not the person who does this.

I know that I get irrationally angry when someone checks their phone when in a theater. However, it can also be super distracting when it happens with someone’s watch. Theater etiquette seems to be dying, but we are trying to raise awareness of how to do get better at it.

Theater mode is a setting that prevents your watch from lighting up or making sounds when you move your wrist. It also disables the raise to wake and tap to wake features, so you can only turn on the screen by pressing the side button or the digital crown. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1:

For older models: Swipe up from the bottom of your watch face to access the Control Center.

For newer models: Tap the side button to access the Control Center.

Step 2:

Look for the icon that looks like two theater masks. It should be in the top left corner of the Control Center.

Step 3:

Tap on the icon to turn on theater mode. You will see a confirmation message on your watch screen and a small mask icon at the top of your watch face.

Step 4:

To turn off theater mode, repeat steps 1 and 2 and tap on the icon again. You will see another confirmation message and the mask icon will disappear.

That’s it! You have successfully learned how to turn on theater mode on your Apple Watch. Now you can enjoy your movie or show without worrying about disturbing others with your watch. Remember to turn off theater mode when you are done, so you can use your watch normally again.
